JACKSON, Wyo. — The Town of Jackson will honor America’s first inhabitants and Tribal Nations with an Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration on Monday, Oct. 14, at the Center for the Arts.
Replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day is a campaign that goes back to 1992 in Berkeley, California, but historical and cultural recognition has recently been growing in Jackson Hole.
“We will celebrate with conversation and connection through food, story telling, dance, drum and singing in the lobby and Center Theater,” the Center for the Arts said via its website.
Festivities are free and open to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. The celebration is hosted by the Wind River Community Alliance with support from the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole and the Town of Jackson.
The event’s schedule is as follows:
- 5:30 to 6:30: Connection through food and storytelling in the Center lobby
- 6:30 to 7:30: The Wind River Dancers’ dance, drums and singing performance in the theater
- 7:30 to 8:30: Socialize and celebrate more in the lobby
