JACKSON, Wyo. — Shoulder season is upon us, with many local businesses closing for weeks at a time before ski season brings visitors to town. So what are locals up to while these businesses are on hiatus?

Buckrail ran a survey asking how our community spends the off season, and you answered. Below, find the most salient survey responses.

Seeking warmer climates

“I usually spend some amount of time somewhere sunnier (Moab, South America, etc.) and then the majority of it enjoying the rare moments of calm in this testosterone-filled town!”

“I go fishing in either the OBX of North Carolina, for tuna, or else to Hawaii Island for tuna. Remember: You can tune a piano, but you can’t tunafish.”

“I spend the fall in Brazil kiteboarding. Not only is this sport epic, it also gets your core strong for the upcoming ski season.”

“Going to Zambia for two weeks of safari.”

Relaxing

“Napping, reading, watching ‘Gunsmoke.’”

“In Jackson Hole’s off-season, my daily workout consists of a culinary marathon, rotating between the hospital cafeteria’s gourmet delights, Bubba’s breakfast burrito and Nora’s quesadilla. It’s a deliciously effective way to ensure my winter coat isn’t just a jacket.”

“Just generally enjoying this quieter time. Wishing it lasted longer.”

“Depressed and lonely.”

Prepping for winter sports

“I change up my workouts to prepare for ski season.”

“Cross country and skate skiing. Chores and paperwork when too cold to go out.”

“What off season?”

“I have to continue working, as the banks and the landlords do not furlough my bills for the off-season.”

“I will be working in construction like I do the rest of the year because life is getting more expensive.”

“We work to pay our crazy rent.”

“There isn’t really an ‘off season’ in Jackson. Some local activity is always peaking every month. In November you might say that it is the moose viewing peak, as the rut winds down and moose start to come out into the sagebrush flats for easy viewing. Other animals remain very active as well in preparation for the brutal winters as the weather cools.”
