JACKSON, Wyo. — History Jackson Hole will host a Curator Talk on women artists from the American West on Monday, July 15 at 6 p.m.
In a time marked by exploration, expansion and cultural change, pioneering women artists used their creative talents to capture the spirit of the frontier, depicting majestic and wild landscapes. These women showed the spirit of adventure that defined the West and challenged conventional gender roles by pursuing their careers as artists.
Art historian and curator Camille Morineau will present an illustrated slide Curator Talk, Women Artists from the American West, on Monday, July 15 at 6 p.m. at the Jackson Hole History Museum, located at 175 East Broadway Avenue. The presentation is free and open to the public; doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
Morineau’s talk will showcase the contributions of Rocky Mountain women artists who were instrumental in shaping the artistic landscape and society of the American West during the transformative period between 1869, when Wyoming became the first territory to grant women’s suffrage and 1920, the year the 19th Amendment granted all American women the right to vote.
Morineau will introduce the audience to several women artists of that period from Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. While some originally hailed from the East, while others were native to the West, they all traveled around the U.S. and Europe and returned home showing a deep connection to the land and people of these regions.
Camille Morineau, heritage curator and art historian specializing in women artists since 2014, is the co-founder and executive eirector at AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions.
Based on the observation that women are underrepresented or even totally absent from art books, exhibitions and museum collections, AWARE’s mission is to contribute to the visibility of women artists by creating, indexing and disseminating information on women artists of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
Morineau has worked for 20 years in public cultural institutions in France. She was appointed president of the board of directors of the École du Louvre by decree of the President of the Republic on November 9, 2020.
