JACKSON, Wyo. — The community has hiked High School Butte enough in two days to reach the $100,000 donation pledged by a local donor.

According to a social media post by the Jackson Hole Land Trust (JHLT), which is running the Boot up the Butte campaign, participants hiked the butte 1,000 times in just two days. The 1,000-hike campaign was scheduled to run from Monday to Saturday in order to unlock a $100,000 commitment that will go toward the purchase of the property that holds the High School Butte trailhead. The parcel is being sold by the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole to raise funds for an employee housing project.

“Now let’s go BIGGER,” JHLT wrote on Facebook. “Every hike over 1,000 earns $1 toward High School Butte, courtesy of one of our board members.”

As of noon on Wednesday, the butte had been climbed 1,260 times. Local businesses are taking turns at the base of the trail, offering free goodies to hikers from 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, which is the last day of the hike-a-thon.

“Let’s not leave a single dollar on the trail!” JHLT said.
