JACKSON, Wyo. — A pair of mountain lions was reportedly seen near Game Creek on the evening of Thursday, June 27. Game Creek residents and recreators in the area are encouraged to be vigilant.

A post on social media site Nextdoor stated that two mountain lions were spotted past the Game Creek trailhead around 8 p.m. on Thursday. The author of the post reported that their husband had seen the big cats while out for a bike ride.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Jackson office noted that it had not received any reports of mountain lion sightings as of Friday afternoon, but the agency did confirm that mountain lions have been known to frequent the Game Creek area.

Also known as pumas, cougars, catamounts or panthers, mountain lions are typically active around dawn and dusk, coinciding with deer activity. The carnivores are also known to eat porcupines, rabbits, squirrels, marmots, skunks and other small mammals. They are said to be elusive, and they tend to travel solo, preferring rocky, rugged territory.

Aggressive encounters with humans are not common for these animals, but surprising a mountain lion in its habitat might result in injury. See these safety tips for recreating in mountain lion territory.
