JACKSON, Wyo. — Wyoming Representative Harriet Hageman joined 215 other Republicans and two Democrats in the House to shut down President Joe Biden’s Student Loan Debt Forgiveness Plan.

The final vote split was 218-203.

The Biden Administration Plan aims to help working and middle-class federal student loan borrowers transition back to regular payment as pandemic-related support expires by extending loan forgiveness of up to $20,000.

On Jan. 27, the Biden Administration released new data showing how many people from each state applied or were automatically eligible for one-time student debt relief. The data reports 30,000 people in Wyoming applied or were deemed automatically eligible for relief, roughly five percent of the population.

The University of Wyoming reported that in 2020-21, 43 percent of first-time students who graduated with an undergraduate degree had student loan debt averaging $23,592.

The resolution now heads to the Senate. The U.S. Supreme Court is still reviewing the legality of Biden’s program.
