GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK — Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) has announced that its advanced reservations for backcountry camping permits for peak season (May 1 through Oct. 31) will become available online at 8 a.m. MST on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Interested parties must have an account on recreation.gov to make an advanced reservation. GTNP warns that permits go quickly once they become available.

According to GTNP’s announcement, approximately one-third of backcountry camping permits are available via advanced reservation. The rest of the permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis in person at the park’s permit offices, and can be secured one day before the camping trip’s start date.

GTNP reminds campers that a backcountry camping permit allows the permit holder and total number of people in the group to camp overnight for the designated dates and locations specified on the permit. Individual permits can cover up to six people. Groups of seven to 12 people must camp in designated group sites. The maximum overnight stay per location is two nights, with the exception of Jackson Lake, which is three nights. No person or group is allowed to camp for more than 10 nights between June 1 and Labor Day, and not more than 30 nights per year.

A new permit fee structure was adopted in time for camping season last year. On top of park entrance fees, campers are charged a flat rate of $20 for the permit, plus a nightly fee of $7 per person, per night. See full details on the park’s website.
