JACKSON, Wyo. – As COVID cases spike in Wyoming, Governor Mark Gordon urged citizens to stay the course and double-down on safety measures, including the wearing of face coverings.
“Let’s not get cocky. Let’s not get careless,” Gordon warned. He blamed the surge on “a cavalier attitude” that he called “incredibly unfortunate.”
Gordon added he was very hopeful the state could eliminate all health orders a week or two ago until incidents of positive tests began rising.
“Current orders will now be extended out through July 15 and we may have to rescind some orders and reimpose some restrictions on businesses,” Gordon said. “I know some people will give us the victory signal one finger at a time if some rules are put back in place.”
Social distancing, good hygiene, and face coverings are the rule of the day, the governor said.
Dr. Alexia Harrist, the state’s public health officer, said. “We expected to continue to see cases over time. But now seeing highest rate of any time during this pandemic.”
Both Gordon and Harrist said the 4th of July holiday weekend could be a critical moment in the fight to slow the spread of the virus.
“This is a beautiful state and it is a wonderful honor to have people choose to visit this state,” Gordon said, calling out Teton and Park counties by name as places where an increase in tourism has been observed in the past few weeks. “Let’s make sure we can do it safely.”
