WYOMING — April 2023 will be Wyoming Native Plant Month after Governor Gordon signed a proclamation to raise awareness about the importance of native plants in the state’s wilderness ecology.
The proclamation defines native plants as indigenous species that evolved alongside native wildlife and occur naturally in a specific geographic region. There are over 2,500 native plant species in Wyoming including large shade trees, shrubs, vines, grasses and wildflowers.
According to the proclamation, “native plants are essential for healthy, diverse and sustainable ecosystems and are critical for cleaning air, filtering water and stabilizing soils.”
Governor Gordon is encouraging Wyoming residents to celebrate the importance of native plants as a source of food and habitat and as a foundation of the state’s biological heritage.
