JACKSON HOLE, WYO – A nip in the night air and frosty mornings are beginning to foretell the advent of fall when hunters head for the hills. A preview of the hunting season was offered by Wyoming Game and Fish.

Highlights include a slowly rebounding mule deer population, limited pronghorn opportunities in the Jackson region, and few changes to the outlook for elk.

The Jackson herds of moose and bighorn sheep continue to be a concern. Moose totaled 253 classified this year, with sheep numbers still far lower than objective. A reduction in mountain goat tags from 12 to 8.

After a very successful (98% harvest rate) reduction hunt in 2016 that nearly halved bison population from more than 1,000 to closer to the 500 objective, game managers will use the hunt for stabilizing purposes after a count of 546 bison was recorded in 2017.
