JACKSON, Wyo. — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) is hosting a workshop called “Living in Large Carnivore Country” to educate people on staying safe in bear and mountain lion habitats.

The event will take place Wednesday, July 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alpine Civic Center, located at 121 US 89 in Alpine.

The workshop will cover ways to reduce conflicts with grizzly bears and how to coexist safely with bears and lions. Attendees will learn about bear and mountain lion food habits, where people are most likely to come across these animals, safe food storage, bear and mountain lion behavior and what to do in an encounter with them.

Participants will receive hands-on training on the correct way to use bear spray by using inert practice cans on WGFD’s mechanical charging “robobear.”

“We thought this workshop would be a great chance to refresh the public on bear safety and the resources available to them such as our on-call conflict response personnel,” Mark Aughton, Bear-Wise large carnivore biologist from Cody, Wyoming, said in a statement.

The event is open to people of all ages and all levels of outdoor experience. WGFD encourages residents, outdoor enthusiasts, workers and livestock grazers who live, recreate, work or graze livestock in bear and lion country to attend.
