JACKSON, Wyo. — Leaves, branches and pumpkins can become compost made locally instead of taking up space in a landfill. Fall Clean Up Week begins tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 31, and offers valley residents two free drop-off options, each with a different schedule.

The Teton County Trash Transfer Station will accept up to 500 pounds per household of clean residential yard waste for free from Saturday, Oct. 31, through Saturday, Nov. 7. Drop-offs are available during regular hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on both Saturdays.

The Town of Jackson will offer a one-day-only collection at the Jackson Rodeo Grounds on Friday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Officials stressed that yard waste and pumpkins may be dropped off at the Rodeo Grounds ONLY during those hours and on that day. Trash and pet waste are not accepted.

Residents may bring leaves, grass clippings, branches and clean Halloween pumpkins to either location; bags should be emptied into the appropriate piles. Candles and decorations must be removed from jack-o’-lanterns, and painted pumpkins cannot be composted.

The event makes fall yard work easier, “and it benefits the environment by turning those materials into compost here in the valley instead of throwing them away with trash,” said Cindy Harger, Teton County waste diversion outreach specialist.

Free compostable lawn bags are available while supplies last at Jackson Town Hall, Jackson Public Works and the Teton County Recycling Center. Bags are not required to participate. Plastic yard waste bags are also recyclable in the “plastic film” bins.
