JACKSON, Wyo. — Portions of Yellowstone’s Northeast Entrance Road between Tower Junction and Lamar Valley will be closed from 7 to 9 p.m. June 14, June 21 and June 22, according to a press release by the park.
According to Yellowstone, sections of the road were successfully blasted earlier this month, but due to the large cleanup and removal of materials associated with the blasting, closures originally planned for June 12 and June 15 are canceled.
During the 2022 historic flood high water eroded the slope below the road rendering it unsafe for use. To repair the damage, crews cut a temporary one-lane road into the hillside. Crews are blasting into the hillside to create a new two-lane road, which will be more resilient and able to withstand the effects of erosion and future flooding.
More blasting is needed to complete the job, prompting the additional closures. The contractor may not need the entire two-hour closure window and the road may open sooner.
