JACKSON, Wyo. — A START Bus that appeared to “go up in smoke” Tuesday afternoon on Pearl Street was actually steaming due to an engine failure.

“Bus number 276, a 2011 Gillg 30-foot hybrid-powered bus, experienced an engine failure that resulted in coolant being leaked internally into the combustion chamber of the hot engine and creating steam that was expelled from the engine through the exhaust system,” said Town of Jackson Community Engagement Specialist Susan Scarlata.

Scarlata explained that what appeared to be smoke being emitted from the exhaust was actually steam.

“The vehicle returned to the fleet maintenance facility and will be retired and replaced by one of the 11 new Gillig,” Scarlata said.
