JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The Wyoming Republican Party yesterday announced the eight people who have filed to fill the vacant Secretary of State position. Leland Christensen’s name was not among them.
Party chair W. Frank Eathorne said, “In accordance with Wyoming Statute §22-18-111, the State Central Committee will select three persons to fill the vacancy. Governor Matt Mead will appoint of one of the three persons to become Wyoming’s next Secretary of State.”
Party leaders must first narrow the field to three. Applicants who submitted paperwork to declare for the office include Pete Illoway (Cheyenne), Darin Smith (Cheyenne), Ed Buchanan (Torrington), Richard George (Powell), Max Maxfield (Cheyenne), Cynthia Cloud (Cody), Robert Elwell (Cheyenne), and Nina Webber (Thermopolis).
Christensen had declared his desire to seek the position but later learned he is barred by statute from running because he is a current state legislator. Christensen is a state senator.
The State Central Committee will meet on February 24 at 1pm at Little America in Cheyenne to consider the applications. Applicants will have the opportunity to address the group and answer questions. The meeting is open to the public.
