Doggie Hamlet... This is no joke. Dog Sheep Buckrail - Jackson Hole, news

You’re probably wondering… “What the heck is this Doggie Hamlet all about?” You’re not alone.

In Ann Carlson’s daring and incredibly unique performance, Doggie Hamlet, the audience may be a bit shocked and awed to know that they will be sitting on hay bales out in an open field on protected ranch land – watching the unlike-any-other dance between four dancers, one boy, one American Sign Language interpreter, two herding dogs and a flock of 30 sheep. That’s right sheep!

“Preposterous!” you may say… “Absurd!” Doggie Hamlet challenges what we know about traditional dance, performance space, and who has the privilege to perform.

First, animal lover. Second, artist and choreographer: Ann Carlson’s award-winning work, Animals, included dances with goats, a dog, a fish and a kitten and toured throughout the US and Europe. Each year Carlson appeals to all animal lovers and families with her stunning outdoor spectacles.

These performances of Doggie Hamlet mark Carlson’s first collaboration with Babs Case and Dancers’ Workshop.

Doggie Hamlet investigates the relationship between humans and animals, performance and nature – and everyone’s joining in for the experience!

Regional vendors will be selling woolen and sheep goods. Seating will be on hay bales (guests are welcome to bring stadium seats). Also, please feel free to bring your own blanket to cozy up while you watch the performance as the sun sets behind the mountains. Maho Catering will have a food truck on site, beer and wine concessions available.

Dancers’ Workshop is pleased to bring Ann Carlson’s Doggie Hamlet to Jackson. If not for the love of animals, go for the love of absurdity! You won’t see anything like this.
