JACKSON, Wyo. — The statewide deadline is approaching for voters to change or declare a political party before Wyoming’s primary election on August 18.
Wyoming law requires voters to be registered with a chosen political party by May 13 to participate in that party’s primary election. Teton County is reminding constituents that those who do not update party affiliation by the deadline will remain registered with their current party for the primary. If a voter is registered as unaffiliated, they will not be able to vote in the primary.
“Currently there are 2,500 undeclared voters in Teton County,” Teton County Clerk Maureen Murphy said via press release. “That means, they have not declared an affiliation to the Democrat Party or Republican Party. If they don’t declare a party by May 13, they will not receive a ballot for the primary election.”
Because the primary election lets voters choose which candidates will represent their party in the general election, those who have not declared a party cannot participate. Party affiliation will not affect participation in the general election, which will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The deadline applies to any voter who wants to change political parties, declare a party affiliation for the first time, or switch from unaffiliated status to a party. Unaffiliated voters who live in town can still vote in the Town Council primary because Town Council is a nonpartisan body.
Those looking to update their party affiliation before May 13 can do so in person at the Teton County Clerk’s Office, located in the basement of the County Administration Building at 200 South Willow Street. The office is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Voters must bring an accepted form of identification when updating registration. Any of the following documents will be accepted in 2026: Wyoming driver’s license or ID card; Tribal ID card; valid U.S. passport; U.S. military card; valid Wyoming concealed firearm permit; driver’s license or ID card from another state; University of Wyoming student ID; Wyoming community college student ID; Wyoming public school student ID; valid Medicare insurance card; or valid Medicaid insurance card.
