JACKSON, Wyo. — Two local students have been recognized for their winning historical essays, announced The Davey Jackson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) this morning.
Phoebe Turner, an eighth-grade student at Jackson Hole Middle School, took home the first-place prize in the American History Essay Competition (AHEC) for students in grades five through eight.
This year’s AHEC topic was “The Second Continental Congress.” Turner will receive a check for $50, a certificate with a medal and an American history book. Turner is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Turner.
Sascha Mizelle of Jackson Hole Classical Academy also took home first place for her essay titled “The Contribution of Baron von Steuben to the American Cause.” Mizelle participated in the Patriots of the American Revolution essay contest for high school students.
Mizelle will receive a check for $100 along with a certificate and medal. Mizelle’s essay also recently took the first-place prize at the D.A.R. Wyoming State-level competition. Her essay is now competing at the D.A.R. Northwest Division level. Mizelle is the daughter of Christina and Rusty Mizelle.
The overall caliber of Patriot essay contest entries received from area high school students was extremely high. Accordingly, the Davey Jackson Chapter elected to honor three additional students with Excellence in American History awards. The students receiving this award, which includes a certificate with a medal and check for $50, are Case Meaney, 10th grade at Jackson Hole Classical Academy, Laney McDowell, 9th grade at Jackson Hole High School and Grace Collins, 11th grade at Star Valley High School.
“The Davey Jackson Chapter is exceedingly proud of the accomplishments of all of these students,” the chapter said in a press release.
DAR promotes annual essay contests to encourage young people to think creatively about American history and learn about history in a new light. Essay topics change with each academic year.
