JACKSON, Wyo. — On Apr. 23-24, Dancer’ Workshop’s Junior Repertory Company (JRC) will be presenting New Dances/ New Choreographers at the Center for the Arts. JRC members will be performing their take on this year’s theme “What is Now”.

New Dances/ New Choreographers is the culmination of teaching the choreographic process to advanced students of the School at DW. Led by Junior Repertory Company Director Michaela Ellingson, DW’s youth ensemble showcases their choreographic efforts through a fully produced evening of original live dance.

Also featured are works by professional choreographers David Dorfman and Curtis Thomas of David Dorfman Dance, who through a choreographic residency modeled best practices for imagining dances and translating those images into the dancers’ minds and bodies.

JRC dancer and Jackson Hole High School senior, Ashlyn Fadala, explained how this show is a gratifying experience for both the dancers and choreographers as it highlights the highest levels of the school.

“Something that is different between NDNC and [other performances] is that is confined to the more experienced dancers. In my opinion, it makes it a bit more special and it’s really cool to see some people and their skills really come alive in this specific show.”

The production is a unique opportunity for DW students to engage in leadership through the school and to connect with fellow dancers while making new artistic choices.

“We take a class in choreography, learn how to translate movements to our cast, and add production elements to our works” said Fadala.

“What I enjoy about it personally is the ability to connect with my dancers on a different level as a choreographer and just to be able to create new relationships with them through that.”

Fadala emphasized how this event is particularly special in that dancers have to audition to be a member of JRC and then are required to participate in an apprenticeship to become a company member. JRC members dance up to six days a week and are required to take ballet and modern classes. However, they can also take classes in jazz, hip hop, and pointe.
