HOBACK, Wyo. — A downed communications cable in the Hoback River is being addressed as of noon on Tuesday, May 6.
Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer checked out the situation following a post by the Snake River Fund warning of the hazard.
“A communications cable is down and presenting a serious hazard to boaters under this bridge,” the nonprofit posted to its river conditions map on Monday, May 5. “Please avoid floating until we can confirm the cable is fixed.”

Snake River Fund Executive Director Orion Hatch spoke to Buckrail about the hazard on Tuesday afternoon, sharing that he’s been in touch with CenturyLink regarding the cable’s detachment from the bridge. Hatch noted that CenturyLink sent crews to the site to get the cable out of the water and perform a temporary repair, with plans for a more permanent fix down the road. The cable has reportedly been down for weeks, but rising water levels on the Hoback made the situation more urgent this week.
Hatch observed that water levels are rising across the valley this spring, and encourages river users to be aware of early season conditions. Before heading out, assess the stretch of river and always wear a personal floatation device. River users who encounter any hazards are encouraged to report them to the Snake River Fund.
This is a developing story. Buckrail will provide updates as information becomes available.
