JACKSON, Wyo. — Got a question about this November’s Special Excise Tax (SPET) ballot measure?

Teton County will host a Zoom session on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at noon to discuss the estimated budget for building a new Justice Center. This meeting is part of the County’s “Lunch and Learn” series about the ballot initiative. Wednesday’s discussion will focus on the project’s budget, estimated construction inflation and the cost for a building that “requires a lot more infrastructure than a typical building,” according to the County.

The new Justice Center, which would replace the current Teton County Courthouse and Detention Center, will cost an estimated $118 million. The county has budgeted $30 million for the project and is seeking to make up the remaining $88 million through the SPET.

If voters approve the SPET on Nov. 5, the county will start collecting an additional penny of tax on goods and services (excluding groceries). The county estimates it will take about 4 1/2 years for revenues to pay for the Justice Center, but is aiming to start construction in 2025.

Teton County launched two new websites this summer that offer a view of what a new Justice Center would look like. For more information on this meeting series, see engagetetoncountywy.com.
