JACKSON, Wyo. — The Rec Center expansion project will begin Monday, May 23, with pre-construction activities, announced the Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department (TCJPRD).

Construction staging is the first step in the expansion project, with construction activities set to begin on an undetermined date in June. The 20-month project includes an indoor track, a second gymnasium, an indoor climbing wall, and additional health and fitness opportunities.

According to the Parks and Rec Department, staff intends to keep the aquatic center and gymnasium open throughout most of the construction but recognize that there may be occasions when the facilities will need to be closed temporarily.

“We are mindful that there may be times that are challenging for both staff and Recreation Center users, but we are trying to mitigate those impacts as much as possible,” said TCJPRD Director Steve Ashworth. “We appreciate the public’s enthusiasm for this project, as well as their understanding and patience over the next 20 months.”

The satellite food pantry, sponsored by One22 and the Jackson Cupboard, located at the entrance of the Rec Center will need to find an alternate location amidst construction.

“The program and satellite pantry has been a great resource and we are very proud to play a role in a partnership that has such a positive impact on our community,” said Ashworth. “It is our goal to provide a permanent, dedicated space for this program in the new facility.

A temporary location for the food pantry has not been identified.

At the end of April, town and county officials approved additional funding for the project, a guaranteed maximum price of $33,663,002. Ashworth cited that the additional funds are needed due to an increase in the scope of the project and substantial construction cost increases since 2019.

On November 5, 2019, the voters approved the Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center
Expansion and Renovation, Community Climbing Gym, King Street Extension, and Stormwater Treatment proposal for $22,000,000 as part of a 1% Specific Purpose Excise Tax (SPET) on goods and services.
