Free community opening for “Cristina Mittermeier: A Greater Wisdom” brings churros,
mariachi, and inspiring wildlife photography to the Museum
JACKSON, Wyo. – Jackson Hole will get a first look at one of the year’s most anticipated exhibitions on Friday, Oct. 30, when the National Museum of Wildlife Art hosts a free community opening for Cristina Mittermeier: A Greater Wisdom. The celebration runs from 5 to 7 p.m.
For 30 years, Mexican photographer, author, and activist Cristina “Mitty” Mittermeier has traveled the globe documenting the beauty of the planet, its wild inhabitants, and the cultures of the people who call it home. Organized by the National Geographic Society and Gallerie d’Italia, Intesa Sanpaolo’s museums, A Greater Wisdom is making its North American debut right here in Jackson Hole. Her compositions reveal the threads connecting humankind to the broader web of life and invite each viewer to find their own state of “enoughness.”

“We look forward to sharing this inspiring exhibition with our community,” said Executive Director Steve Seamons. “Mittermeier’s work sparks wonder, inspires critical thinking, and reminds us that we all belong to a collective whole.”
The timing suits the season. Among the works on view is a portrait of La Catrina, the elegantly dressed skeleton who has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Día de Muertos. Mittermeier photographed her in Oaxaca, where the holiday’s traditions run deep. Those traditions honor death not as an end, but as a continuous thread connecting past and present, an idea that echoes the interconnectedness at the heart of the exhibition. To welcome Spanish-speaking community members, the exhibition wall text is presented in both Spanish and English.
What to expect at the opening
Guests can settle in with a treat from Streetfood. The first 300 guests receive free churros and a cup of Mexican hot chocolate (one per person). Mariachi Juvenil Juarez will provide live music throughout the evening. Families and friends can take on a gallery scavenger hunt for a chance to win a prize, and museum educators will be on hand to talk with visitors.

The Museum’s other new fall exhibitions are worth a look. Birds in Art celebrates its 50th anniversary with 60 works, including highlights from past years of the beloved annual show. Impact and Entanglement: Three Video Works by Christina Seely fills the Wapiti Gallery with immersive video installations and daguerreotype portraits, created alongside scientists in the Arctic and tropics.
The community opening is generously sponsored by the Friess Wildlife Art Charitable Lead Trust, the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board, and the Lea Charitable Trust.
