JACKSON, Wyo. — A 2023 Camping Report from the The Dyrt, the largest source of information for campgrounds in the U.S., confirms that last year was the most booked year for campsites with 2023 posed to continue the trend.
The content on The Dyrt is user-generated, based on camper post photos, videos and reviews of 2 million U.S. campgrounds. The Report is based on surveys of campers and property managers.
According to the Report, campers said it was five times harder to find an available campsite in 2022 than in 2021. The top three forms of camping were RV camping (45 percent), tent camping (38 percent) and van camping (6 percent).
The Report showed that the majority of campers in the U.S. are over 55 years, with roughly a quarter of campers between 25 and 45 years. Almost 50 percent of campers reported an annual income of over $100,000. Property managers also confirmed through the surveys that almost half plan to raise rates for campsites in 2023.
The Dyrt lists 224 locations in the Jackson area for tent camping, RV camping, cabins and glamping, and 51 locations for dispersed camping.
The Curtis Canyon area is one of the most popular Jackson campgrounds listed on The Dyrt, where the Jackson Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest has proposed projects including road repairs, increasing the size of the Curtis Canyon Campground and relocating the Goodwin Lake Trailhead. The proposals are a result of heavy concentration of dispersed camping and off-highway vehicle use.
Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks remind visitors that all campgrounds and lodging in the parks require a reservation, and car camping or sleeping overnight in vehicles is not allowed in any place other than a designated campground. In Grand Teton, overnight parking at trailheads is only permitted with a backcountry permit.
A recent report from Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) confirmed the record number of people participating in recreation activities are negatively changing people’s experiences on public lands.
