WYOMING — In five days, abortion will be banned in Wyoming.
Today, Governor Mark Gordon certified to the Secretary of State that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade setting in motion the parameters of House Bill 92, the “trigger ban” bill signed into law earlier this year.
“I have certified HB 92 following the Attorney General’s analysis. I believe that the decision to regulate abortion is properly left to the states,” Governor Gordon said today. “As a pro-life Governor, my focus will continue to be on ensuring we are doing all we can to support mothers, children and families.”
Gordon’s signature on the bill in March was consistent with his conservative stance on social and political issues, but deviated from his approach to healthcare during the pandemic. Gordon frequently championed “personal choice” and local control in pandemic-related health measures.
ACLU of Wyoming expressed its devastation and strong opposition to the certification.
“Our access to abortion shouldn’t depend on where we live, how much money we make or who we are. We should be able to make the best medical decisions for ourselves and our families,” said Libby Skarin, ACLU of Wyoming campaigns director. “But thanks to Wyoming’s trigger law, Wyomingites will have fewer rights than people in other states. A person’s health, not politics, should guide important health care decisions – including the decision to have an abortion.”
