JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Residents along South Highway 89 from Melody to Game Creek and beyond were alarmed last night when shortly before midnight a loud explosion was heard. The blast was a controlled detonation, announced ahead of time via Nixle alert by Teton County Emergency Management.
Workers with Wadsworth Brothers Construction Company discovered a box of bombs buried a few feet deep in the ground while excavating the area near the gun range. One of the devices, a hand grenade, went off during the extraction. No one was hurt but workers called local authorities who then called in an ordnance disposal team from Salt Lake City. They arrived late last night and made the decision to close the highway briefly and detonate the box of grenades.
No one was hurt in either explosion. An investigation continues as to why the explosives were there or who put them there.
