ALPINE, Wyo. — The body of the man who was presumed to have drowned in the Snake River Canyon has been located after days of searching.

On the evening of July 4, Star Valley Search and Rescue (SVS&R) began a search effort for a North Carolina man who had jumped into the Snake River east of Sheep Gulch Boat Ramp and never resurfaced. According to Star Valley Independent (SVI), the recovery effort concluded Saturday when campers along the Palisades Reservoir found the man’s body.

SVI noted that campers in the McCoy Creek area saw the body from the shore before paddle boarding out to confirm, and then called the authorities. SVS&R volunteers were already nearby, continuing their search on the water; the volunteers were able to quickly rendezvous with the campers to recover the body. The victim was identified as Tory J. Raether, age 55, of Charlotte, North Carolina.
