DRIGGS, Idaho — Residents of Teton County, Idaho, have been advised to take extra safety precautions amid a big uptick in local bear activity.
According to Teton County Fire & Rescue, Teton County officials used emergency notification system Code Red to issue this message on Monday: “Daily bear sightings in Teton County. Do not leave small children unattended. Secure pets. All garbage and other attractants should be kept inside or in bear-proof containers. Harvest fruit trees, remove bird feeders. Do not approach bears.”
In a social media post, Teton County expanded on that message.
“Bears are approaching homes, porches, even trying doors and windows,” the post reads. “They seem most active in the evening, but sightings are reported all day. Please: take down bird feeders, store trash bear-proof or indoors until pickup day, and keep an eye on kids and pets outside. If you see a bear, stay calm and back away slowly — never run.”
Residents should report “dangerous bears” to Idaho Fish and Game using phone number (208) 525-7290, per the County.
Extra bold bear activity has been ongoing on both sides of the Tetons for the past several weeks. In preparation for winter hibernation, bears are searching far and wide for food sources to help them bulk up.
