JACKSON, Wyo. — Learn best practices for bear spray use with the help of a remote-controlled charging bear simulator known as “Robobear.”
A bear spray giveaway and training seminar will take place in Jackson on Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. on the Teton County Fairgrounds, put on by the Safari Club International Foundation, Wyoming Game & Fish Department, American Bear Foundation, Campfire Conservation Fund and Mystery Ranch.
The agencies will give away approximately 100 cans of bear spray on a first-come, first-served basis to individuals holding a valid Wyoming hunting or fishing license.
“Robobear” will be deployed to create a “time stressed situation,” according to a press release, “allowing participants to try their hand at accessing and spraying the charging bear.” There will also be instruction about electric fence installation, tent and campsite tactics and more.
“Bear spray is an effective deterrent in an aggressive bear encounter, and we hope this effort continues to raise awareness and remind those recreating in bear country to be prepared and stay safe,” WGFD Bear Conflict Manager Brian DeBolt said in a statement.
Biologists from Wyoming Game & Fish and the Forest Service will also be at the event to discuss bear ecology, conservation and “Bear Wise” conflict reduction.

Additional giveaways will be held in Pinedale (Aug. 23), Lander (Aug. 24) and Cody (Aug. 30).
