JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Wyoming is a long way from Washington and, most of the time, that’s a good thing.
With the Boy Scouts of America changing its name to Scouts BSA as the century-old organization begins officially admitting girls (ages 11-17) into the ranks next year, will that nomenclature have far-reaching effects to Jackson Hole?
Perhaps not anytime soon.
This month, as Jackson District Boy Scouts celebrate their 50thyear of auctioning off elk antlers during Elkfest, promotional billing remains “Boy Scouts” on all poster and promotional materials.
The local district has had a standing tacit policy of accepting girls anyway but continues to refer to itself as Jackson District Boy Scouts.
The annual Elkfest celebration wasn’t derailed by pro-life demonstrations a few years ago and it likely will not be disrupted by red tape wrangling at headquarters.
Elkfest is May 19-20. The elk antler auction bidding starts at 10am.
Proceeds benefit the Scouts and the Refuge.
