STAR VALLEY, Wyo. — Bridger Teton National Forest announced Thursday that aerial operations to control and eradicate cheatgrass infestations within the Star Valley Front could begin as early as Monday.
Treatments of the herbicide “Rejuvra” will be dropped by helicopter along south-facing slopes from Alpine to Salt Pass and include Big Ridge.
“Total acres to be treated are not expected to exceed 2,500 acres,” BTNF said via press release. “No treatments will occur at or adjacent to waterbodies. Treatments will be accomplished via a participating agreement with Lincoln County Weed and Pest.”
The intent of the project is to restore, maintain and enhance habitat within the Greys River Ranger District currently infested with this annual invasive or threatened by this invasive.
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) germinates in autumn. BTNF says the invasive grass outcompetes native forbs and grasses for water and nutrients, significantly diminishing the quality of wildlife habitat, especially in the critical mule deer and bighorn sheep winter range.
