YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Yellowstone National Park (YNP) saw a significantly higher number of visits in May this year than in the same month last year, according to a newly released count.

Recreation visits to YNP totaled 522,450 last month, surpassing last year’s May count by 15%.

So far this year, the park has seen a total of 719,127 recreation visits, up 11% from this time in 2023, when visits to date reached 644,979.

Below are YNP’s year-to-date recreational visits at this time for the past several years, provided by the park:

2022 – 733,471 (The park was closed June 13 through June 21 due to the historic flood event. Three entrances opened on June 22.)

2021 – 649,153

2020 – 145,849 (The park was closed March 24 through May 17 due to COVID. Two entrances opened on May 18 and the remaining three opened on June 1.)

2019 – 576,776
