YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Many visitors come to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) in search of wildlife. But what happens when the wildlife approaches the visitor?

YNP shared a video last week offering advice to visitors who encounter a bear from the road.

“What should you do if a bear approaches or touches your car?” YNP posted to social media. “Honk and slowly drive away!”

YNP’s video depicts a black bear approaching, sniffing and appearing to bite a vehicle on a road. The driver of the vehicle honks the car horn, which startles the bear into running away.

“Help us keep wildlife wild and protect their safety and yours,” YNP posted. “When a bear begins to associate people with food, the bear can become aggressive and a threat to public safety.”

YNP frequently reminds visitors of their responsibility to stay more than 25 yards away from bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose and coyotes, and at least 100 yards away from bears, wolves and mountain lions.
