Video: Henry Quinn // Buckrail

JACKSON, Wyo. — Bison on the move. Don’t get in the way of these big guys.

Buckrail staffer Henry Quinn recorded this video from the safety of his vehicle last week. The herd of bison, known as the Teton Herd, often seen south of Moran, made moves real quick and jumped the fence to cross the road.

According to the National Park Service, bison can jump up to six feet high and can run at speeds of 40 miles per hour. Bison can live 12 to 20 years in the wild and grow up to 2,000 pounds.

Bison once numbered over 30 million and lived across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, but they were hunted to near extinction in the 1800s. Through ongoing conservation work, bison numbers have recovered significantly. Today, 19 herds in 12 states roam the American Plains.
