WYOMING — The Wyoming Historical Society (WHS) has announced a statewide initiative to record firsthand accounts, personal stories and photographs related to the significant wildfires that have impacted the state in 2024 and 2025.

In an announcement on Aug. 18, the WHS stated that it is dedicated to documenting moments from an on-the-ground perspective. The organization is attempting to capture stories, struggles, feelings and factual observations of those directly involved.

“The 2024 and 2025 wildfire seasons have left an indelible mark on Wyoming,” said WHS Executive Director Aley Philp in the press release. “Beyond the acreage burned and containment percentages, there are countless human stories of resilience, loss, community, and courage. We believe it is crucial to collect these personal narratives and visual records now, to ensure that the experiences of our citizens are preserved as a vital part of Wyoming’s rich and complex history for current and future generations.”

Major fires in Wyoming in 2024 included the Elk Fire, House Draw Fire and Pack Trail Fire, among others. So far this year, ongoing fires include the Red Canyon Fire, Sleeper Ranch Fire and Spring Creek Fire.

The WHS is seeking submissions from anyone connected to fire events, including but not limited to:

  • Firefighters and emergency responders
  • Individuals evacuated or otherwise displaced
  • Landowners and renters
  • Ranchers and agricultural workers
  • Medical doctors and all first responders
  • Veterinarians
  • Government agents and officials
  • Volunteers and community support members
  • Anyone whose life has been touched by the fires

“The WHS extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who has served on the front lines, supported their communities and endured the challenges posed by these fires,” reads the statement. “Your contributions are invaluable to the historical record.”

Submissions may be emailed or mailed to WHS. Send email submissions to everyday.stories@historythatswy.org and format the subject line as “WY FIRE (FIRE NAME) (year).” Example: WY FIRE FISH CREEK 2024. Emailed photographs must include captions and identification of subjects, locations and dates where possible. Send mail submissions to Wyoming Historical Society P.O. Box 33 Riverton, WY 82501. Mail-in submissions must include contact information and clear descriptions for any photos or documents.

By submitting stories, photographs, or any other materials to the Wyoming Historical Society, the participant agrees that materials can appear in and on any publications of the WHS in support of ongoing efforts to document, preserve, and share Wyoming’s history for current and future generations.
