WISDOM, Mont. — Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is looking for information regarding a wolverine that was shot and killed illegally in southwestern Montana this month.

On Nov. 10, FWP wardens were notified that a wolverine carcass had been found shot, skinned and abandoned on U.S. Forest Service Road 7377 northwest of Wisdom, near Schultz Saddle and the Continental Divide.

“Wolverine harvest is not legal currently in Montana,” FWP said in a statement.

Wolverine harvest is illegal in Wyoming, too. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department classifies them as nongame wildlife and defines them as protected under state statute. Federal protection of the animal could be imminent.

FWP is requesting that anyone with possible information about the illegal harvest of this wolverine visit FWP’s tip website, or call its hotline at 1-800-TIP-MONT. “Informants may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000,” FWP said.
