WASHINGTON – Last week, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced more than $109 million in grants for affordable housing efforts for Native American Tribes in the mountain west, part of more than $1 billion in nationwide Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) funding.

Two recipients in Wyoming were awarded, both on the Wind River Reservation: the Eastern Shoshone Tribe was awarded $2,323,895, and the Northern Arapaho Tribe was awarded $3,601,076.

IHBG funds affordable housing efforts in Tribal communities including housing development, operation and modernization of existing housing, housing services to eligible families and individuals, crime prevention, safety and model activities, according to HUD’s announcement.

“Today’s announcement reaffirms our commitment to serve Tribal communities while working towards meeting Indian Country’s housing needs,” HUD Secretary Scott Turner said in the announcement. “HUD has a strong partnership with Tribal nations across the Rocky Mountain region, and I look forward to collaborating directly with Tribal leaders in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming to expand housing opportunities and remove burdensome regulatory barriers that impede progress.”
