A message from St. John’s Health Housing

JACKSON, Wyo. — Healthcare employees provide essential — and often life-or-death — services to the community. It is not merely about convenience, it is about health, safety, and welfare.

Every Teton County citizen benefits through the assurance that appropriate medical staff is readily available at all times. SJH strives to move closer to a staffing and housing program that keeps the hospital running at full capability even during weather events that close Teton County off from the rest of the world. This project is an essential step in that direction.

“When our newborn needed to be hospitalized, nothing mattered more than having the best nurses possible for her care.”

Proposition #6 St. John’s Health Housing requests $24M for planning, designing, engineering, and constructing workforce rental housing, as well as overnight lodging for on-call hospital staff and patients/families.

In the upcoming general election, voters get to approve SPET projects that align with important community values.

Remember, SPET is not a new tax, it’s the current one penny sales tax that is paid more than 50% by visitors. SPET does not affect property taxes. And, SPET is not a competition. All propositions that get a simple majority of votes in favor will be fully funded in the requested amount.

The housing project will utilize the SJH-owned Hitching Post property located at 460 E Broadway, which is 1.65 acres.

This project will deliver one of the largest workforce housing projects in Jackson history, approximately 100 units. One-third of the project cost will come from SPET funds – and the rest from a partnership between SJH and the Foundation – with no ongoing budgetary impact on the Town or County, i.e. this is a one-time ask for this project. St. John’s will not come back in the next election cycle, asking for more.

“St. John’s lost 87 employees last year, primarily due to housing. The school district lost 60. Town and county functions are seriously impaired by staff shortages. None of these projects will provide a complete answer. All will help.”
