Two emerging artists awarded scholarships

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The Art Association awarded scholarships to two local high school students showing excellence and promise in the visual arts.

Grace Blasco, of Jackson Hole High School, was awarded the Artists&Writers Scholarship, which offers a rising high school junior the opportunity to refine their skills and develop a portfolio over the course of the academic year. Blasco, a mixed media artist, will be paired with a mentor at the Art Association. Together they will develop a detailed plan for Blasco’s experience throughout the year. Blasco will have unlimited access to Art Association classes, workshops, and open studio sessions. She will also receive a stipend for materials and supplies.

“For the upcoming year, I am most excited to develop my artistic skills with this opportunity,” Blasco said.

This is the first year of the Artists&Writers scholarship. Describing the idea for this newly established scholarship, Anne Muller and Amy Unfried, Artists&Writers co-leaders, said, “As a group of creative people active in many different disciplines (including painting, sculpture, photography, poetry, fiction and nonfiction writing, and more) we want to provide encouragement and support to a young person with artistic promise. The arts make a vital contribution to our community; they enable the artist to express and the community to perceive ideas and emotions that otherwise are unseen and unfelt. By supporting a student in her or his growth as a creative person, we hope to play a part in the community’s encouragement of the arts as well as in the life of a young artist.”

Adele Farag

Adele Farag, of Journeys School, was selected to receive the Borshell Memorial Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a talented local high school graduate who pursues visual arts in college. Adele is a talented painter and drawer hoping to pursue a career in visual arts.

Myles Borshell was an accomplished artist and art instructor who considered art a valuable way to connect to others. The Borshell family and the Art Association created this annual scholarship to honor Myles and his vision.
