JACKSON, Wyo. — Community members will gather this evening on the Jackson Town Square to peacefully protest the morality police and Hijab law in Iran.
The rally is from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and aims to show support to the women and men in Iran protesting their government, following the death of the 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Zhina Amini.
According to reports from the Associated Press, Amini was taken into custody on Sept. 16 by Iran’s morality police for allegedly not wearing her hijab in accordance to the Islamic Republic’s rules. Amini later fell into a coma and died after being beaten by police. Government officials maintain that Amini died of a heart attack and collapsed at the station.
As of Sept. 28, at least 76 people have been confirmed killed and hundreds have been arrested and wounded in protests that erupted after Amini’s death. The U.S has since imposed sanctions on the morality police and leaders of other government agencies.
