DRIGGS, Idaho — The National Weather Service Pocatello Office (NWS) has issued two alerts for the Teton Valley area, including a flood watch in effect until the end of the day on Wednesday, Aug. 27, and an air quality alert.

A surge of monsoonal moisture is heading to the region and is expected to bring a prolonged period of rainfall across eastern Idaho. Widespread rainfall totals of around 1 inch are expected, with higher amounts close to 2 inches possible in localized areas.

“This could result in areas of flooding within urban areas along with small creeks and streams,” the alert reads. “Additionally, there will be some potential for flash flooding, especially over recent burn scars.”

The air quality alert from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality states that the air quality index is forecast to be unhealthy for sensitive groups until 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28. Children, elderly and people with respiratory problems could experience difficulty breathing due to air pollutants and particulate from wildfire smoke.

“Those individuals who are sensitive to increased particulate matter or smoke are encouraged to avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity during this advisory,” the warning reads.
