TCSD is prepared for walkout, if there is one The National School Walkout Walkout Buckrail - Jackson Hole, news

JACKSON HOLE WYO –  School district authorities are preaching tolerance this morning as they anticipate, but do not know, whether students at the Jackson Hole High School will choose to participate in a national demonstration.

School officials sent the following note to parents yesterday:

Dear Students/Parents/Guardians,

A National Student Walkout is planned for March 14 at 10:00 am for 17 minutes in honor of the 17 students and faculty killed at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. This is a unique student initiated demonstration. We anticipate some students at JHHS will participate in the 17-minute national walk-out. Although there is some controversy related to the walkout, JHHS administration is dedicated to the security of all our students. We are working with students, staff, and local law enforcement authorities to ensure adequate student supervision, management, and safety during the event, should our students participate.  Our faculty will continue to provide regular instruction in classrooms during the 17-minute demonstration.

JHHS encourages our students to be knowledgeable and tolerant of various points of view surrounding current events. We teach them how to participate in our democracy in a variety of appropriate ways that might include addressing lawmakers through correspondence and other creative interactions that help express how they feel about an issue. Through a variety of experiences our students learn the skills they need to form, support, and express their own personal positions on issues.

Important.

JHHS prefers that students remain in class and engage in regular instruction. All goals, topics, and purposes expressed and presented by any students who participates in the 17-minute walkout reflect the unique perspectives of these students and should not be interpreted as the beliefs of any other groups or individuals in TCSD #1.

Should some JHHS students opt to participate in the walkout, we will:

  • Expect (walkout and non-walkout) students to remain on school grounds and to adhere to the JHHS Student Handbook – Code of Conduct.
  • Expect students to conduct themselves in a orderly and respectful manner to the school and community.
  • Provide a safe, secure and supervised area on the campus for participating students.
  • Expect teachers to continue their normal teaching responsibilities in the classroom.
  • Support students who elect to remain in class with teachers.

Due to supervision resource limitations, adults will not be able to join students on the field.  This is in service of ensuring students safety and ability to monitor participating individuals.
