JACKSON, Wyo. — On Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Headwall Sports, the annual State of the Snowpack (SotS) series will begin for another season. Owner of Headwall Sports Sean Doherty began this event almost 11 years ago when he saw a need for more conversation beyond the early season Wyoming Snow and Avalanche Workshop.
This week, Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (BTAC) forecaster Mike Rheam will talk about the existing snowpack: rain crusts, wind, persistent slab problems and recent avalanche activity. He’ll also go over parts of the BTAC website for those newer to the community or individuals wanting a deeper dive.
Every other Wednesday through March, BTAC, Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) and Headwall Sports will host the event to talk about the local snowpack and recent avalanche activity.
“In broad strokes,” Preventative Search and Rescue Manager for TCSAR Maddie Johnson told Buckrail, “the best part of this event is that it is free and conducive to informal conversation, networking, mentorship and open, nonjudgmental dialogue.”
Most if not all presenters at the SotS this winter will be forecasters from BTAC. They’ll give in depth, high-level and nuanced information for those excited to have a more expert-level conversation.
“There will also always be room for folks to raise their hand to clarify jargon,” Johnson told Buckrail. “The goal is to continue to add tools to people’s toolkits and to make the whole world of backcountry skiing more accessible and safe.”
Pizza and refreshments will be provided at the event.
