JACKSON, Wyo. — While there are no roadrunners in this part of Wyoming, coyotes still find plenty of prey to hunt.

Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer spotted a lone coyote prowling around the snowy landscape and shot some striking images.

A raven even photo-bombed one of the shots.

Coyotes’ diet consists of voles, mice, rabbits, other small animals and carrion. This coyote likely heard something scurrying around in the subnivean zone, which is the area between the surface of the ground and the bottom of the snowpack.

Small animals retreat to the subnivean zone for protection from harsh winter weather and access to food like bugs, seeds and plants.
