JACKSON, Wyo. — The lightning-sparked Kinky Creek Fire in the Gros Ventre Wilderness has more than doubled in size since yesterday, now estimated to be 770 acres in size, according to a Thursday morning update by Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF).

Burning on a steep slope in heavy timber west of Darwin Ranch, BTNF noted the fire remained active all day yesterday until a little rainfall past 10 p.m. helped slow its activity. Residents of private lands nearby, including of Darwin Ranch, have been told to be ready for potential evacuation orders.

A type 3 incident management team has taken over control of fire operations, per BTNF. Resources assigned to the fire include four helicopters, smokejumpers, two hotshot crews, and more, totaling about 95 personnel working toward containment.

“Crews have established an anchor point at the heel of the fire and are working to keep the fire west and north of the Gros Ventre River,” BTNF’s Thursday update states. “They are also going direct on the south edge of the fire, working along the fire’s perimeter to contain it. Additionally, fire personnel have set structure protection measures around Darwin Ranch. Today, aerial resources will continue working to limit fire spread and support ground operations by attacking the fire from above, particularly in areas too hazardous for firefighters to safely access.”
