JACKSON, Wyo. — Don’t blink or autumn in the Rockies will be over.

Buckrail asked readers to submit their fall foliage photos, and so far the submissions have been impressive.

According to the National Park Service (NPS), quaking aspens often get confused with birch trees. Although they have some similarities, they belong to two entirely different tree families. Birch trees are known for having bark that peels like paper, while aspen bark does not peel.

All aspens in a single “stand,” or group, will share a root system underground, per the NPS. A single root system could be as large as 20 acres. Because all the aspen trees that share a root system are genetically identical, they will all have the same shade when transitioning from green to yellow in the fall.
