WILSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Hole Land Trust (JHLT) has announced that Rendezvous “R” Park now allows dogs in all areas, not restricted to perimeter trails, but all dogs must be leashed at all times.
According to JHLT, the persistent presence of off-leash dogs has been compromising R Park’s goal to provide a sanctuary to both people and wildlife in an increasingly busy landscape. While a comprehensive dog management plan initially restricted dog walking to the perimeter trails in an attempt to ensure the safety of park visitors, including wildlife, JHLT says the continued disregard for that policy has resulted in dog-human and dog-wildlife conflict.
“Prompted by a general disregard for our existing dog management plan, it has been revised,” JHLT told Buckrail.
Dogs are now allowed on all trails at R Park as long as they are leashed at all times. There is new signage present in the park noting the leash mandate and enforcement. Those walking their dogs off-leash will be asked to leave by staff regularly walking R Park to ensure compliance.
“In anticipation of WYDOT’s pending wildlife fencing and wildlife crossings project for the Highway 22/390 corridor, and the likely increase in ungulate presence in R Park as a result, we will evaluate the community’s compliance with our updated dog policy at the end of the season,” JHLT also confirmed. “If we continue to regularly see dogs off-leash, we will consider stricter measures, including a complete ban on dogs from the park for the safety of visitors and wildlife.”
R Park also prohibits amplified sound, fires, smoking, weapons, glass containers and camping for the safety of visitors and wildlife. Everyone is asked to “scoop your poop,” give wildlife space and practice leave no trace, which includes not picking the vegetation.
“By working together to foster a culture of responsibility and respect, we can ensure that R Park remains a cherished and welcoming destination for all,” JHLT says.
