CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Secretary of State’s Office announced the start of the 2024 election cycle with the opening of the candidate filing period, which runs from Thursday, May 16 until Friday, May 31.

Candidates for the primary election can file their Application for Nomination beginning on Thursday, May 16.

Major party candidates for the office of U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Wyoming State Senator (even numbered districts) and Wyoming State Representative must file with the Secretary of State’s Elections Division. The 2024 primary election will take place on Tuesday, August 20.

Candidates filing with the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office can file in person or online through the Candidate Filing web page. A list of candidates who have filed to run for office will be posted daily, and will be available on the Secretary of State’s Election Center website.

“Running for office is a pivotal part of our Constitutional republic, and is also a tremendously rewarding experience,” Secretary of State Chuck Gray said in the announcement. “We encourage candidates to consult our 2024 Campaign Guide, and contact us with any questions.”

New to the election process this year is the rule stating that Wyoming voters had to register their party affiliation 96 days before the election. In the past, Wyomingites were able to change party affiliation at any time, including on election day.

Prospective voters in Wyoming can register or re-register to vote by visiting the local county clerk. Residents must present a valid ID (Wyoming driver’s license, U.S. passport, tribal ID, U.S. military card, Wyoming school photo identification card or an identification card issued by the Federal Government) to register.
