WYOMING – On March 3, Governor Gordon signed a bill that will extend Medicaid health insurance for mothers from 90 days to 12 months postpartum.

HB0004 provides “extended postpartum coverage to pregnant individuals enrolled in Medicaid pursuant to the Wyoming Medical Assistance and Services Act or enrolled in the Child Health Insurance Plan” and appropriates a combined total of $3.8 million from general and federal funds to be spent on the medical assistance of pregnant women in accordance with the bill’s terms.

According to a press release from the governor’s office, the signing of this bill was a “signature piece of pro-life legislation” that Governor Gordon believes will provide physical and mental health support to mothers and children in the critical first year.

The signing of this bill comes after the Wyoming legislation passed two abortion prohibition bills and in anticipation of thousands losing their Medicaid insurance coverage in the next year.

This bill will go into effect on July 1 and authorization for coverage will end March 31, 2027.
