JACKSON, Wyo. — Valley residents awoke to a thick blanket of smoke in Jackson Hole on Saturday, Sept. 28. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Battalion Chief Brian Carr told Buckrail the smoke is coming from a number of fires, including some in Idaho.

Bridger-Teton National Forest notes on its Facebook page that a new fire was discovered within its boundaries, known as the Pack Trail fire, estimated to be about 450 acres in size.

“The lightning caused Pack Trail fire was identified Sept. 15, and is 3 miles south of the southern edge of the Fish Creek Fire and is burning in heavy timber and brush just north of the south fork of Purdy Creek,” BTNF’s Facebook post reads. “Current fire behavior is active with single and group tree torching with 100% of the fire perimeter active.”

BTNF advises that smoke is expected through the weekend. According to the update, firefighters are still battling the Fish Creek Fire, burning on 25,069 acres in the forest southeast of Moran.

“Both fires have been showing smoke columns since Thursday afternoon,” BTNF added.

AirNow.Gov rates the air quality in Jackson as “moderate,” encouraging people with sensitivities to remain indoors if possible.
